Step-by-step instructions for the video validation

After reading the detailed instructions, you may want to download our single page validation form that also includes an excerpt of these instructions to assist you in your validation.

  1. Check, or set, the ROI of your Telraam S2. This will tell you what part of the street your Telraam S2 is looking at, so you can point your camera to the same area.

    • If you have not yet manually set the ROI of your Telraam S2, then please do it now (see detailed instructions).

    • If you, or your network administrator have already set an ROI then still check the ROI image on your dashboard.

    • Save the ROI image from the dashboard, we will need this image from you, and you will want to refer to this in the next steps.

  2. Set up a video recording device (GoPro, smartphone, digicam, etc.) in your window with a view as similar as possible to what is included in your ROI.

    • Make sure that your recording device has a field of view that covers the full ROI. It is not a problem if it is wider, even if it is twice as big, because we will process your video and crop and resize it according to your ROI. If the video has a narrower field of view than your ROI we will not be able to use it.

    • Make sure that your recording device is stable, so either use a tripod, a suction mount, or duct tape it against the window.

    • The default video settings will probably be fine on any device that has been manufactured in the last decade, but for the more technically inclined, we are happy with anything that is at least HD quality, and 30 FPS or more (30 and 60 are preferred.) 4K is to be avoided due to excessively large file size and unnecessary detail. Recordings will never be published in any form by us.

  3. Record the traffic that your Telraam S2 sees for 15 minutes (or multiples of 15 minutes).

    • Ideally, please start the recording precisely at the hour, or 15, 30, or 45 minutes past the hour. Preferably use the time shown on your smartphone, smartwatch, or laptop/desktop computer, as these are synced to a precise clock over the internet. This is only important so that we can compare the results from your actual Telraam S2 with counts from our debugging tool using your video.

    • Note down the starting date and time (e.g.: 13 October 2023 12:15).

    • After 15 minutes, stop the recording. If the recording is a bit longer than 15 minutes that is not a problem, we will cut the material anyway, but please record at least 15 minutes.

  4. Fill in our Google Form

  5. Wait a maximum of 5 weeks until we get back to you with an evaluation of your recording.

We know that this guide is long and detailed, but it is very important that we only use validations coming from harmonised, well controlled experiments, where as many external factors can be excluded as possible. This makes it easier to see why a Telraam S2 is not behaving as expected, and video recordings from challenging situations will help us improve Telraam in the future. So thank you for your time to do this video validation!
